Chiropractic schools have gone through an evolutionary process beginning with their founder Daniel David Palmer, who in 1897 founded the Palmer School of Chiropractic. Because chiropractic care was very controversial at the time, many practicing chiropractors were actually prosecuted for practicing medicine without a license. Back then (and still today) a chiropractic education was based much on Palmer’s research of medical journals. Palmer wanted to discover the root of all disease. It was through his desire and work that he theorized that 95 percent of all disease is caused by a subluxated vertebra. At that time, chiropractic was often confused with medicine. Authorities finally acknowledged chiropractic as a separate profession to that of medicine. And Palmer’s chiropractic school flourished. Since that time, the social climate has evolved into an even higher approval of the field. One of the first known cases of chiropractic treatment Palmer administered was on a deaf man who had injured his back nearly two decades in the past. Making an adjustment to his vertebra, Palmer successfully restored the man’s hearing! Thus began the chiropractic school of thought. Palmer’s son and apprentice integrated X-rays into the practice of chiropractic to distinguish the differences between traditional medicine and chiropractic. By using X-rays, chiropractic schools today can enable practicing chiropractors to identify bone disease and to demonstrate the anatomy to productively administer precision adjustments to the spine. Oftentimes, general chiropractic studies will include some forms of massage and massage therapy, or even acupuncture. Chiropractic is still not always accepted as an effective treatment in today’s mainstream medicine. Chiropractic schools aim to change that mode of thinking. While independent trials and other research demonstrate chiropractic to be as good, if not better, than traditional medicine, radiologists commonly deny the proof of “subluxations.” This issue proves to be equally as difficult for chiropractor researchers to effectively convince other medical professionals. More recently, in 1996, the General Medical Council and the Royal College of General Practitioners in the UK offered their advocacy to chiropractic specifically for back conditions. Rich in history, chiropractic schools today instruct students in not only the elementary roots of chiropractic, but the art of chiropractic treatment. Because all U.S. states and the District of Columbia regulate the practice of chiropractic and grant licenses to chiropractors who meet the education and examination requirement established by the state, students who desire a career in chiropractic should carefully examine chiropractic schools for curriculum and requirements. Palmer’s chiropractic school, which was established in the late 1800s, has definitely branched out into several regions. Today, students can opt to attend numerous accredited chiropractic schools and programs in the United States. In most cases, students who wish to attend a chiropractic school are required to have a minimum of 90 semester hours of undergraduate studies in biology, English, chemistry, psychology, and physics prior to enrollment. The future chiropractor will gain clinical experience in geriatrics, nutrition, orthopedics, neurology, laboratory and physical diagnosis, and several other associated studies. Successful graduates who have met all educational requirements will be granted a Doctor of Chiropractic Degree. Those who have completed their chiropractic education can go on to rewarding careers where they may earn as much as $118,000 annually. By Cathy Stucker When you attend networking functions, what kind of name tag do you wear? One of those sticky things you scrawled your name on, or something a bit more sophisticated? For just a few cents to a few dollars, you can have a classy, customized name tag that will draw attention and comments and help you make the most of every networking opportunity. Instead of relying on those disposable sticky tags, you can get your own engraved or imprinted name badge at your local office supply store. Some even allow you to add art, such as a full-color logo or even a color photo. At prices ranging from $10 to $20, you can have a distinctive and attractive name badge. In addition to your name, your tag might include your company name, the URL of your web site, the name of your product, or your slogan or tag line. A catchy URL or slogan can be a conversation starter, inviting the people you meet to ask about your business. If you have a graphic designer create your logo, letterhead, business cards, brochure and other marketing materials, ask him or her to also design a special name tag. As an author, I like to draw attention to my book. For less than $3, a local copy shop made a laminated tag with a color image of my books cover. Wearing it guarantees that people will ask about the book. Your tag might include an image of your company logo, or photos of your products or storefront. Make your name tag large enough that the people who meet you can recognize the images and read the text. One entrepreneur breaks this rule in a creative way. He uses a name tag that is a miniature version of his brochure! The tag gets attention, and gives him an opening to offer a full-size brochure. Do you have an attractive and distinctive web site? Get a name tag that reproduces the home page. Wear a name tag or button with a provocative question or statement on it. It will inspire those you meet to ask questions, and give you an opportunity to tell them about what you do. You can print a tag yourself and put it in one of those plastic name tag holders, or go to a copy shop or graphic company where they can make one for you. In a pinch, you can put one of your business cards in a plastic tag holder. Consider having more than one tag. Each tag may be designed to appeal to a different audience or emphasize a different benefit. You can even make them to coordinate with your outfits! Wear your name tag proudly at the next networking event you attend. Wear it to professional meetings and conferences, when you make a speech or teach a class, or when you are just out and about running errands. There are child crafts you can make with kids of all age groups, from preschoolers right through high school aged teenagers. When the weather isn’t cooperating, give your kids a variety of child crafts to work on. Clear your kitchen table off and gather some basic supplies- it’s time to get crafting! Some kids prefer to come up with their own child crafts; letting their imaginations take over and making things out of miscellaneous supplies like toilet paper rolls, paper, yarn and glue. Other kids prefer to have instructions and patterns for making specific child crafts. You can find child crafts ideas in magazines or online if you aren’t feeling creative enough to make up your own. Popular Child Crafts for Preschoolers Before getting started making child crafts, gather all the supplies! Create musical instruments with coffee cans, and elbow macaroni. This is partly attributable to the ever increasing range of innovative products which complement the more traditional items, but also because of the growing recognition of the valuable role that promotional products play in the marketing mix. Because most promotional products are useful and appreciated by the recipient, they are retained and used. The imprinted message therefore gains repeated exposure without any further cost to the advertiser. Research* shows that 71% of an audience consisting primarily of business people said that they had received a promotional product in the previous 12 months. Of this group, 33.7% actually had the item with them. Furthermore, 76.1% of respondents could remember the advertiser’s name on that product, whereas only 53.3% of the same group could recall the name of a single advertiser they had seen in a magazine or newspaper in the previous week. 52% of those questioned reported that their impression was more favourable after receiving the promotional product and that they had gone on to do business with the advertiser. The Burning Brides of Afghanistan

By Aidan Maconachy Islamic scholars who argue that the rights of Muslim women are guaranteed by the religion, are quick to point to passages in the Qur’an and Hadiths that speak in lofty and compassionate terms about the role and status of women. However the reality of women’s lives in developing countries paints a different picture. A culture, indeed a mythology, of patriarchal dominance is a theme that runs throughout Islamic history. This male centric world-view combined with poverty and a lack of education, frequently leads to conduct toward women that not only runs counter to the teachings of the prophet, but is a violation of law and of the most basic humanitarian standards. Wars in Afghanistan have turned women into pawns, routinely exploited in a power struggle that is exclusively male. The highest Muslim values of womanhood - purity and modesty - have been targeted as a strategy of war. In many of the internecine struggles that have taken place in Afghanistan, Mujahideen have used rape as a tool of war, in an effort to demoralize and weaken their enemies. Women are regarded by warring parties as little more than pawns to be abused for political and military advantage. Women are also exploited for the purpose of gaining a propaganda advantage. Male factions are forever proclaiming their rules and regulations for women in the public debate. As a result Afghani women are turned into political chattel, their freedom and will overruled by males who speak for them and predetermine their destiny. The plight of women in Afghanistan, is mirrored in other parts of the Islamic world. For example in Pakistan as a result of an archaic “honor code” women are sometimes killed to satisfy family pride. This is considered to be a fit punishment in some circles for bringing shame on their families. Astoundingly accusations of “bringing shame” can involve the simple act of leaving an abusive husband or marrying a man of one’s choice. Women who are raped through no fault of their own, are frequently regarded as “shame bringers”, and so candidates for murder. The lawyer and human rights activist, Hina Jilani, has this to say of the plight of women in Pakistan … “The right to life of women in Pakistan is conditional on their obeying social norms and traditions.” In countries such as Afghanistan, the plight of women has become so dysfunctional that many young women are committing suicide at an alarming rate. In most cases they do this by self-immolation, burning themselves to death with the aid of gas and a match. The official count was 93 for such deaths in 2005. It is believed that many more women are killing themselves in this fashion. Often these tragedies remain unreported due to family shame and the stigma involved. Under the Taliban women were treated like inferior beings, and this patriarchal attitude toward women still persists. As much as 80% of all marriages in Afghanistan are forced arrangements. In over 50% of these marriages the brides are under 16. Frequently they are forced into marriages with men in their middle years or even older. These female children are used like goods basically, to discharge a debt or as payment for some arrangement or favor. It is hardly surprising that this view of women persists in Afghanistan. Under the Taliban women were an “invisible” presence with no rights save those given to them by the men who controlled them. They weren’t even considered worthy of education, and certainly not worthy of casting a vote. Many of these young girls who choose to end their lives with fire, are trapped in marriages with men who are abusive. They can’t leave because to do so, would bring shame on their families. Their plight becomes so desperate that some see suicide as the only available option. As is the case in Pakistan, the authorities seem to take the attitude that it’s the woman’s problem when such tragedies occur. While Islamic scripture accords honor to women, there is a gap between theory and practice. Those who attempt to whitewash the social problems that are afflicting Muslim women in developing countries by simply reciting passages of the Qur’an, are doing a disservice to these women. In order to find solutions to these issues, it is essential to address the root cause, and this involves challenging the male-centered customs and attitudes that keep many Muslim women in a position of subservience. Is There Too Much Litigation?

By Vernon Stent I’m sure you will not have failed to notice that we have become a more litigious society. Whether this is right or wrong is a matter of great debate, but here we are with our ambulance chasers, our ultra protective corporations and public bodies and countless rich lawyers and insurance salespeople working for all sides. Some will argue that the law is the problem. Our law is adversarial. It generally needs winners and losers. If someone is disadvantaged by the act of somebody else, they can often find a remedy in one of our many laws. Someone will probably sue and may then counter-sue, all because compromise is often not in the lexicon. Others may blame those who practice law. Criminal law exists to deal with acts that most of us deem to be unacceptable. The civil law is a little different. It may intervene in disputes; it may quantify the scale of a loss and, of course, identify the party or parties responsible. The question is: can the whole civil law industry - this massive and intricate production line that eats up public funds and our funds - be accused of feeding itself? We already know that lawyers need to have a continuing diet of new clients. Isn’t it also the case that the courts and the staff that work in them also welcome new business? How many cases are thrown out as being too trivial and a waste of the court’s time? Certainly some are thrown out, but is the proportion as high as it should be? Others will take a totally opposite view and blame those who are being sued. This school of thought is: the law is doing its job. If everyone worked within the law then there would be no (or let’s say very little) litigation. This is a powerful argument often put by lawyers. Of course powerful arguments are their stock in trade! Their point is that if toy shop has sold an unsafe and illegal toy then that toy shop should be held accountable and be made to pay for breaking the law. By doing this the toy shop will make sure that, in future, toys sold from its shop will be safe (well, that’s the theory). By holding organizations and individuals to account, the law is gradually making the world a safer place. If this is the case, one would expect that the world will indeed become safer. Therefore, surely the increase in litigation should level off and indeed fall, as the effects of litigation bite. Only time will tell. If it does, and if we are all safer and are being treated more fairly then surely the lawyers were right all along. If it doesn’t - if litigation increases and the lawyers continue to grow in number and riches - then I think that a point will come when we need to clip the wings of the civil law industry. The cost of protective and defensive measures against litigation; the cost of fighting cases and the massive insurance costs are now becoming serious for us all. These costs are being added to the goods we buy and the services we pay for and are surely adding to the tax burden. For now we have the system that we have and must work within it. Also, there are some areas where, even if there were no laws at all, we would have a moral duty to adhere to standards. For instance, nobody has the right to put others at risk, especially when they are not informed of the risk. Emotion is the Engine of Brand Choice

To get TV viewers to give a precious second of their attention to a commercial message is beyond daunting its nearly impossible. A commercial that fails to entertain, therefore, has very little chance of tearing a viewer away from a myriad of other distractions. Remote controls have made it too easy to surf around commercials. And the new TiVo technology, which enables viewers to record favorite programs with commercials automatically edited out, presents a truly frightening prospect for our advertising industry. The question we must ask of advertising is: How do we craft marketing strategies and creative brand messages that prompt viewers to voluntarily surrender their attention to watching a commercial? We might also put it this way: How do we get customers to care? The importance of that question cannot be understated. It is vastly different and quite superior to the question: What do we tell the customer? It brings about a more effective answer because caring is an emotional response. A consumer simply hearing some facts (if we can even get them to listen to those facts) is not as engaged. Great advertising must prompt people to care rather than simply understand a list of product attributes. Yet a great deal of advertising today is merely factual. For the most part, marketing departments have believed that they need a quantifiable product advantage in order to convince a potential customer to switch brands. They ask themselves why the customer should care, and yet they answer this emotional question with a rational benefit. Hmmm. Most of us have no understanding of the reasons behind our brand selections as a matter of fact, we dont need reasons. Oh, sure, when somebody asks us why we choose what we choose, we can and do come up with some rational reasons. We do it because we think we need a rational basis for our purchasing behavior. But really, we dont. Our actions in the marketplace are almost always intuitive and emotional. Consider beer purchases. Does anyone believe that Budweiser is the runaway market leader because beer consumers are big fans of Beechwood and Budweiser is Beechwood Aged? In other words, do they buy it because of taste? They may say they do, but in blind tasting only the savviest two or three percent of beer drinkers can distinguish any difference between beer brands. If they can taste a difference, they are hard-pressed to name the brand. Beer brand choices are obviously not about taste and rarely about benefit or attributes. If you want a customer to change brands, you must make them care. You must know what they care about, and it is no surprise that the thing people care about most is themselves their beliefs, attitudes, convictions. Therefore, you should develop a strategy and execution that speaks to them in an emotional way that connects your brand with their beliefs. This means that you must understand your customer better than your competitors understand your customer. You must learn to ask and find answers to these questions: What do they believe to be true about themselves? What do they believe to be true about the world in general? Consider laundry soap. We live in an efficient, competitive epoch of commodity products where a soap powder that has made it into the marketplace is assumed to be effective. If it is for sale, it works. The problem is that there is a Grand Canyon between a customers favored product choice and all the others in a category, and this attachment to a particular product has nothing to do with effectiveness. The products that become part of a consumers life do so because the consumer feels an emotional pull towards those products. Why has Tide remained the market leader? Does everyone who uses Cheer wear only color clothes (Cheer has positioned itself as color safe), and do Tide users wear only white shirts to take advantage of the bleach in Tide? If the effectiveness of advertising were truly based on specific advantages of products, then all of us would keep at least two brands of laundry soap on the shelf: Tide for white clothes, Cheer for color clothes. Soap brand managers must believe Tide users dont care whether color clothes fade. Uh-huh. Tide has remained on top of the laundry heap because there is an emotional connection to the brand message that extends way back to its emergence as part of the American cultural landscape. Even consumers born in the eighties find comfort in the familiarity of the brand, and its not about heritage and habit as much as it is about family and family values. How much are consumers willing to pay for this feeling of connection? Check out the price points next time you are in the supermarket. Consumers dont pay this premium because of effectiveness or a brand promise of quality. They pay it because they desire a closer connection to their own lives. Marriage Takes a Giving and Forgiving Attitude

By Angie Lewis I believe the whole idea of marriage is getting a bad rap these days, and it is because some people are just a bit too selfish for marriage. What do you think? You cant be selfish in your marriage and then expect it to prosper, can you? Happiness is not found through the person you married? Not to say you cant be happy with the person you married, but as we all know, happiness comes from within. But what happens when we dont have anything within us to be happy about? Well, then you stop and look at your attitude. What are you bitter about? Why do you feel the need to control people and situations around you? Many things you are powerless too, and so you need to understand what those things are and let them go. For instance, you cannot control another human being without them feeling resentful. You cannot stop an alcoholic from drinking anymore than you can expect your spouse to change to be what you want them to be. This is how a selfish person thinks. It is selfish to try and make someone do something just so you can feel better. This is not a giving or forgiving attitude but an attitude of bitterness and contempt. How can married people concentrate on the blessings they have and heal their marriage? How can a married selfish person discover the goodness in their spouse? By focusing on what brings true contentment and happiness in life. Stop and look at your attitude. What is your attitude telling you? Unfortunately, so many married people rely on the sins of the world for pleasure and happiness only to bring garbage and negativity back into the marriage. Why focus on whats out there when you can focus on what is in front of you and make it better? Jesus said, What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man exchange for his soul? If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Fathers glory with the holy angels. (Mark 8:36-38) Why do you say, I have a bad marriage? Maybe what you should be saying is, I am a bad marriage partner? The reality is folks, marriage takes a giving and forgiving attitude, and without that, what is left? You tell me what happens when you dont forgive your spouse? Tell me how you feel when you hold in resentment about something your spouse did? What does it feel like to only see the negative stuff about your spouse? It feels like a bad marriage, doesnt it? But who is doing this to you? Who is giving you that kind of attitude? You are doing it to yourself, and that is the real facts here. How come do I know this? Because I carried around that attitude myself! None of us are immune to behaving selfish but when a spouse refuses to forgive, or refuses to trust again, or to be accepting, or to come out of their resentment, I believe there is a real lack of wisdom in that persons life. Wisdom comes from God, but if we do not really know God or accept God into our lives we will not have godly wisdom within us. We will have an attitude filled with our own understanding. And what is that? If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. (James 1:5) So then what is the struggle in marriage? Is the struggle saying no to worldly pleasures and desires? Is the struggle not realizing the perfect blessings we have been given already from God? Could it be the struggle is that we have not asked For Gods loving guidance into our lives? Are we too proud to come to Christ and accept His love for us? If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. (Galatians 6:3) Double check your attitude and see if it only needs adjusted a little bit. When our bodies get too cold or too hot we adjust the thermostat in our homes, when our minds get too hot or too cold in our marriage we only need to adjust our attitude. Forgive others, be repentant, be forgiven, and love! Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use it, it will be measured to you. (Luke 6:37, 38) New Release!
